We have such complex, confusing lives nowadays that it can be calming to be in a place that is not complex. Minimalism decor is appealing in the way a Zen garden is appealing; the lack of clutter and the simplicity facilitate a tranquil state of mind.
Minimalism decor is a way of emphasizing space over content. It is not so concerned with what is there as what is not there. There are no unnecessary ornaments or bric-a-brac lying around. Non-functional ornaments on the mantelpiece is anathema to minimalism decor.
If you want to use the principles of minimalism in your decor, favor hard, shiny surfaces. Upholstery is generally out; a leather chair or sofa is better. Most surfaces are plastic, glass, or metal, and where there is wood, it tends to be dark wood, varnished to a high gloss. Painted wood is generally speaking not part of minimalism decor.
